Draft: to be reviewed by a qualified adviser before launch.
Privacy notice
We collect only the information we need to run the service, and we never sell your information.
What we collect
- Your name and email address.
- Your password, which is protected using industry-standard security and cannot be viewed by anyone, including our team.
- What you choose to put on your profile: a short introduction, your usual availability (guides), and the topics you share or want to learn.
- Your hellos, the times you book, the quick updates you send (such as "Running late"), when you press "Join video call", whether calls happened, thank-you notes and any reports you make.
- If you are a guide: your video call link (shown only to learners with a confirmed call), anything you tell us about your volunteering experience, and a record of the checks our team has done (for example "photo ID checked on 3 March"). We never ask for or keep copies of ID documents or DBS certificates.
Why we use it
To run Kindly Curious: to show your profile to other members, arrange your calls, send you email alerts (which you can turn off, except password resets), and keep the community safe. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests in providing the service you signed up for.
Who can see it
- Other members can see your profile (with your first name and last initial) and thank-you notes. Your email address and phone number are never shown.
- On video calls, the video service's own privacy rules apply. It may display your name or email address.
- The person you are arranging calls with sees your hello and the times and updates between you.
- Our safety team may review this information when a concern is reported. We cannot see or record your video calls.
Where it is stored
Kindly Curious is hosted by Replit, a company based in the United States, under a data processing agreement with safeguards for UK data. Emails are sent through our email provider.
How long we keep it
Until you delete your account. When you do, we remove your name, email and profile. Your past hellos stay in the other person's history as "Former member". We may keep reports for longer when needed for safety.
Your rights
You can see, correct or delete your information at any time from your profile and account pages, or by emailing kindlycuriousuk@gmail.com. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
